Another good exponent
of the Italian Black Metal movement
arrived to BurningBlack… This time is a
one man band, formed in 2003 by
Sacrifice… After hearing all its
released material, from the first demo
to its latest material (a split demo
with the Chinese band Original Sin) and
after maintaining contact for quite a
while… we decided to arrange this
interview…
BB:
First I would like to thank you for
giving us this interview… Can you tell
us about the band beginnings?
Thanks so much to you
for the support and for the space you
grant me on your zine. Mourning Soul was
born around 2003 even when I fed the
desire to play this music before. I use
to play Black Metal with two friends,
but after the split up of this band,
around 2003, I choose to continue alone
this dark way. From here the project was
born.
BB:
Why you choose the
name Mourning Soul for your band? Did it
have something to do with the song with
the same name from the German band
Absurd?
I have chosen the
name Mourning Soul because it represents
fully what I want to express in my
music. My art is very intimate and
personal, it isn’t anything else than a
deep analysis of the darkest and cryptic
part of my person. Mourning Soul is only
a side of my personality that is
described and "exorcized" through the
music. It doesn't have anything to do
absolutely with the song of the Absurd.
I have never followed this band…
BB:
Why you decided to
run this band as a solo project? Have
you ever considered including more
members?
When my first band
split up after only few years of life, I
understood that the only way to succeed
in playing true Black Metal was that
soloist. The intimacy that it creates in
the solitary composition and at the
moment of the recordings is fully
reflected on the songs. Loneliness has
made my works darker. The total liberty
and the absence of compromises, to have
nobody near have allowed me to fully
express what I want… The result you can
listen on my works, would not have been
the same if there had been other people
involved in the band.
I announce you,
however, that two members have joined
the family (as session members):
Decrepit on guitar (current member of
the band Velchans) and Nocturnal Fog on
drums. I complete the line-up on the
Bass/Vocals duties. We play some Jam
session in the rehearsal room and the
results were fucking violent!!!
BB:
Your work has evolved
enormously since your first demo “An
Abyss Called Life”…What you think the
main differences, stylistic or whatever,
between the mentioned demo and you
latest work are?
I think all of my
works deal with the Old school Black
Metal without compromises. Each one
exists, with natural differences, but I
wouldn’t repute those as very evident.
At my
second demo
“…Lost”,
I paid more
attention to the mixing to avoid some
errors of the first work.
I think “An
abyss called life” was a wilder and
primordial approach unlike the second
demo that it was more reflexive and
dark.
All
expression comes in spontaneous way,
without any forcing. I only allow
speaking my wounded by darkness soul…
BB:
In your personal
opinion, what’s your most complete work
to date?
I think that "… lost"
is slightly more suit than its
predecessor even when I wouldn’t
differentiate completely these two
works.
I feel them really
close to myself and therefore they form
a single whole with my person.
BB:
How has been the
audience response to your Split work
with Original Sin so far? Are you
satisfied with the final results?
I received some good
critiques here in Italy.
I’ve exchanged my
material with many Italian bands that
have really appreciated this Split.
Let’s say I am satisfied
enough.
BB:
Your latest work was
released under the Chinese label Funeral
Moonlight Productions… How you get
involved with this Far East label?
I was already in
contact with the FMP from some time…
Aaron, the boss of the label
contacted me to reprint my first demo
"An abyss called life" in 150
hand-numbered copies.
Subsequently, after the sessions of “…
lost”, two tracks remained
and I wanted to insert them in a split
with some interesting band. I
asked to Aaron for some interesting band
for such purpose and it contacted me
with Original Sin. That’s how we
got this accord; the Cd was released as
133 hand-numbered copies in DVD case.
BB:
Are you satisfied
with the label’s work? Will you continue
working with this label in the future?
I’m satisfied enough
with the label's work. Considering that
he deals only with true Underground
Black Metal trying to support it in
decent way. I don't know yet if we will
continue this collaboration in the
future.
BB:
When you compose the
music for Mourning Soul, what are your
sources of inspiration?
The principal sources
of inspiration are taken directly from
me. I analyze the more hidden part of
myself and inner feelings
that flows and dictate me texts and
music for my band. Is like a
process of catharsis… The inside of me
is expressed in music.
Is undeniable the
fact that being a human being is
conditioned by the whole shit that
surrounds this world.
The humanity is really pathetic!
Most of the time I
compose in winter months
when I move to a country house in
total loneliness for the necessary
time. Is there where my works
take life…
BB:
What were the most
influential bands to you?
Naturally the
greatest influence comes to me from the
early 90’s Norwegian bands. I’m a true
Black Metal fan, I couldn’t live without
the mythical albums of bands such of
Darkthrone, Burzum, Mayhem, Immortal,
Emperor etc… These albums have become
the soundtrack of my life…
I can’t forget the glorious French BM
scene called "Black Legions", where
militated great bands such Mutiilation,
Vlad Tepes and Torgeist. I am
also a great fan of Judas Iscariot
I will certainly call this band as
one of my biggest influences. Now
I’m also listening bands like Horna,
Clandestine Blaze, Satanic Warmaster and
Sargeist… I think these bands, by now,
leads the actual Black Metal scene.
BB:
Being a declared
Darkthrone fan, what’s your opinion
about the actual sound of this Norwegian
band?
For me, Darkthrone
will always be Darkthrone.
They have reached such status that
are able to play whatever they want
without going down… this is
praiseworthy! After released
masterpieces like "Transilvanian Hunger"
and "Panzerfaust" they became source of
inspiration for thousand of black metal
band in the world… don't forget
the music is the mirror of the artist,
we can not pretend the artists
continue to playing something that
doesn't reflect them... even when
dislike to the older fans…
BB:
What kind of music
are you listening to nowadays?
I’m listening to a
lot of Underground Black Metal stuff.
I continuously listen to demo-tapes
of Mutiilation, Katharsis, Azaghal, etc…
I just can’t stop listening Black
Metal!! I also listen to old
school American and Swedish Death Metal
and the good old raw and satanic Thrash
metal!! In the "breaks",
Progressive metal, hard rock, ambient…
BB:
I’ve formed a good
opinion about the Italian Black Metal
scene during these years running this
zine…What’s your opinion about today’s
rising Italian Black Metal scene?
I’m in contact with a
lot of Italian bands
and I can't do anything else than
agreeing with you! The
underground here is varied enough
that some bands has reached some status.
I have many demos, we exchange a lot
of material… Just to mention
some: Gort, Velchans, Nurnen etc… these
bands are really anchored to the
underground tradition. We hope
the some labels recognize our movement…
BB:
When can we expect a full length debut
from Mourning Soul?
By now I am
interested in auto-producing demos.
If ever had to be a full-length it
must be produced from a label that
really believe in Mourning Soul.
Do not misunderstand me; I don't want to
sign with a label just for economic
reasons or similar bullshit.
That’s why I considered the
auto-production will be indissolubly
attached to a demo… The whole
Underground package, raw recording and
home production etc… The demo
serves to find a definite label that bet
on you and allow you to have some
professional artworks, a best recording,
distribution and wider promotion. Then I
will attend the some labels
ideas…otherwise fuck off!!!
BB:
Thanks once more for
your time and congratulations for your
work… These last lines are completely
yours…
Thank you for the
space that you have granted me and for
the support that you have shown in
general always towards Mourning Soul and
for whole Underground scene. For info,
