Satanism as a way of life, Black Metal as a hateful expression of chaos, is the message this band spreads. Formed in 2002, with three demos at their backs their released “Heart Of Chaos” a work that condenses the extreme and orthodox ideologies of the band… Hateful Bruxa, guitar player and founder of Gelida Obscuritas, accepted to answer all our questions… here are the results.  (Pictures taken from Gelida Obscuritas official homepage http://al-sakar.ru/alsakar/gelida/ )

BB: First I would like to thank you for giving us this interview. Can you tell us about the band’s beginnings?

The band began its being in 2002 a.b. after Gelidus Caliga’s being was stopped. It was just beginning of Gelida Obscuritas, it’s line-up had changed for a few times and now it seems to be the best (me – guitars, Grave – vocals at the stage, vocals and drums in the studio, A. – bass). We need to find a drummer for gigs, I think that solution will be founded soon.

BB: Can you tell us about Gelidus Caliga? I know that it’s a completely different entity, but I guess it could be a sort of base for Gelida Obscuritas… Am I right?

Yes, it was the base, and some songs of GC was recorded with GO. It was my first band, and it took it’s place in history.

BB: “Heart of Chaos” is the first work of Gelida Obscuritas I have listen to… Can you tell us about your previous discography?

First of all, we recorded “Die Now!” demo. Another one release was “Vox Mortigenus”, a compilation of live & rehearsal recordings that was released after changing of line-up. And here is promo of LP released on CDr...

BB: I understand “Heart of Chaos” demo 2004 wasn’t re-recorded for this first full length… Was it remastered?  

Yes, this promo CDr contains some tracks that were recorded for the album. The whole album was re-mixed and re-mastered in 2005 a.b. (and some guitars were re-recorded).

BB: The album title “Heart of Chaos” seems very clear to me… but I would like to hear (read) you definition of the concept behind this name…

Heart of Chaos is Satan. It’s enough to understand the album’s name concept.

BB: My favourite tracks from “Heart Of Chaos” are “Before The Storm” and “Decay Of My Soul” (I really liked the vocals at this track…) What can you tell us about these particular songs?

“Before the Storm” isn’t my favourite song, for me it seems to be the most simple track on this album. I tried to incarnate the image of the Chaotic storm killing everything and to show a feeling of coming storm. Do you know the yellow glowing that is in the sky before the thunderstorm? It’s about coming of the last storm. We have a new song “Rain of Fire”, I think it will be more close to this image… What about “Decay of my Soul”, it’s my favourite song on the album, but to say truth, I don’t like vocals.

BB: Are you satisfied with the final results of “Heart Of Chaos”?

No. It’s not good result for me. Some lyrics, vocals, the recording’s quality are not good. I’m sure that the next album will be stronger.

BB: What about the reception of this first full length? Are you satisfied with the listeners’ response?

Most of responses are good. We got a few bad responses...

BB: You are openly a Satanic band. What is Satanism to you? …To worship the Devil or to find a personal spiritual way far from dogmatisms?

Satanism is worshipping to the Devil. It’s the only definition that can be. People who don’t dedicate their life to Him are not Satanists. Satanism isn’t about self-satisfaction, fun or empty philosophical studies.

BB: The idea of a Devil, as a spiritual entity of pure evil, is clearly part of the Judeo-Christian imaginary… What’s your personal conception of “The Devil”?

The Devil is primordial Evil, Heart of Chaos Who is eternal. He was and He will be. JC conception is just one of human concepts; it will be destroyed as all human concepts will be. You can find His Shadow in every human religion, because everyone knows that Evil exists. It’s not evil of people who all will die. It’s Eternal Evil that will destroy the Universe.

BB: You also seem to be a chaos worshiper. Do you think chaos is more part of the human essence than the always chased - never reached “spiritual perfection”?

Chaos is not a part of human essence. It’s never-ending Ocean. Our universe is just a lacuna in it, a lacuna that will be destroyed by Chaotic pulse. Chaos doesn’t mean disorder, but disorder is a way of entropy, a vector of coming back to Chaos. That’s why all human disorders, like serial killers or revolutions etc., are nice.

BB: In what fronts are you fighting this war against the light?

We’re killing souls by sound. I think human soul is a part of god. So we must kill them. Music is good weapon, it has more deep action then other arts, so that’s why we prefer to use it. I think it’s not right to tell about more esoteric aspects of War.

BB: Church burnings, murders and desecration defined the early 90’s Black Metal explosion in Scandinavia… What has Gelida Obscuritas in common with all this controversial re-born of Black Metal?

This question and all questions like this seem to be a kind of provocation. People who act like this never tell about it to anyone if they don’t want to be in jail. But as I said before, human destructive activity is ok because it’s a way of disorder.

BB: What’s your opinion about the strong NSBM scene worldwide and especially in Russia?

NS never had any relation to BM. Because NS is a way to future, and BM=Satanism is a way to Nonexistence. So we can speak only about BM-like music. I don’t know a lot about activity of such bands, it’s not interesting for me…

BB: If you had to choose the most influential band to the whole Black Metal scene… What band would you mention?

MAYHEM. Of course I mean the band whose glorious history finished in 1993 a.b.

BB: What about the future plans of Gelida Obscuritas?

I don’t like to talk about future plans because I never sure that it will come like we want. But we have a lot of ideas about next releases. And we’ll continue our live performances.
